I don't really want to reinstall the whole system again, it is too much of settings to do after. Is the driver installed via the repos or from AMD's site, or with smxi? Also, you might want "radeon.modeset=0" to kernel parameters, I recalled I used this parameter on Chakra Linux(it was added by the Catalyst package they had). Also, I suggest trying to run this command : "sudo amdconfig --initial -f --adapter=all" If it fails with "amdconfig" for some reason(can't find amdconfig) use aticonfig instead .. The "-a" option is useful for windowed applications (ex: noXgl ppracer / noXgl -a googleearth) chooseCompositeWM to choose between beryl or compiz (==> you don't need to run them manually). Reboot . I've cleared + regenerated /etc/X11, rebuilded modules and rebooted, but errors remain.

i got the same probleme!! All good. I've followed wiki manual and installed catalyst, removed open source driver, added nomodeset parametr to GRUB etc. Oh and check that you don't have PlugAndPlay OS on in bios, it could cause troubles(mostly on dual boots though).
I had a Ubuntu 13.10 with a Radeon HD 3850 using fglrx-legacy drivers, and I was forced to remove them in order to upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04. This command is also located in System -> Preferences -> XGL Window Manager [gnome] or K Menu -> Settings -> XGL Window Manager [KDE] They are all described http://nicofo.tuxfamily.org/dotclear...eryl-on-fedora as well. All good. When I rebooted the computer after calling aticonfig, I ended up hanging while booting on a black screen.
