First it was the CCD that had to be replaced. I contacted canon after reading the many blogs, and it appears to be a very common problem, yet they are not willing to do anything about it. Remove these screws (plastic gears WILL fall out when you take off the gear train cover, but they are not too small and it is fairly obvious which way they fit Anyway, after trying the first steps, I got a bit more adventurous and tried turning the lens rings with a bit more force until they started moving.
