Just something to think about. The culprit was the loose lens motor ribbon cable. I was discouraged but I kept doing it and I actually tried to lighting bang the camera on he table while opening the camera and it worked! Don't fret, you have options.

You have nothing to lose.... (Oh and I took out the little battery and put it back in for the clock, that did nothing). I turned the camera off, the lens retracted and we are good to go again. Finally, I realized it was only happening when assembled. I tried point 4 on the "how to repair E18 error" ie pushing the lens gently where there is a gap.
