While I did take them out, what worked was prying the lens out by one of the little bosses, the nub, that held the cap-ring in. Lens popped right out (instead of beeping and saying "lens error") and functioned as normal.

BUt I holdet both the shutter and power on a while. Head over to Canon's repair website here. Got the SD800 IS and is great so far. however i fixed it by taking it apart, the top cover thingy, and then pushing the lens back down into place.

And I didn't get sand in it (as far as I know). Firstly I will say get the right screwdriver a Wiha philips #00. i smeared some spray lube on the lens body and turned it on and off many times also without success.
