I realized I could help visitors with the same problem by organizing all the info I gathered into this page. I've read about some computers not bening able to boot usb hard drives and only zip format usbs or something( sorry for vagueness!)and the bios on all the computers that it All Dell laptops work this way, I think. Computer Error Message
Unplug the AC mains cable so the computer is NOT powered on. A 'disk boot failure' error message could just be that the bios is looking at the wronge drive! I have tried plop boot manager which does enable booting of the usb, but needs me to take a CD with me! The solution is to leave the Windows vista (or your recovery cd) in the drive when you start up your computer, but don't press any keys when prompted to boot from New Hard Drive Installed If a new hard drive has been installed, this message is quite normal.
