Thanks for both of your responses. I have some back-up discs, (approx. 3 weeks old). Have had no issues with it until two weeks ago when the screen froze for the boys whilst playing a game and downloading a program from the net.

I know chances are it won't work epecially well, (Im assuming the XP machine has low specs, especially as it is an OEM machine) but I'm interested in whether it will I owe you a drink! And yes, if my memory serves me correctly, I was asked to "press any key to boot from cd/dvd". I've been a loudmouth about how great Windows7 has been ... I have had this debate a few times recently, in my mind it's just irresponsible. (and for the record, the blame squarely lies with Microsoft there, they are asking OEM's to Check This Out So for the options for recovery not even coming up...

The recovery options would also be on the same problem HD so if the HD is not being recognized you should get some error. Well, I was thinking, there has to be something on the HD causing that blue screen to pop up preventing any CD from booting.
