Thanks, my son was really distraught that his camera was busted. Wrapping card with tape did work all right for me . Brought one for myself and installed it and it also formatted my original card. However, when I plugged the data cable back in, *then* I was able to get into the Format menu and wipe/reformat the memory card, and that solved the problem.
For example, your brand new SD card has only 1.8GB available when it's labeled 2GB. I did everything to check the common flaws, but still the same message occured. Thanks for the help, this side is just great. Stating this once again, formatting will also totally erase your card, so only do this after you've recovered and saved to your computer any important photos from the card. The impact caused the plastic bit that locks in the CF card and battery to become trapped in the metal outer shell. If neither "Class" or "C" is written, the card is likely Class 2 or lower. If you don't have one, get one, as they're only a few dollars on Amazon. This time it's saying "READ ERROR AT..." followed by "The media on the drive may have changed" for a bunch of the first sectors that it scans.
