Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. This should hopefully work. I tried No 7. unplugged cable, now lens opens and closed normally. check my blog

It was fine. I expected more from Cannon which is why I purchased it. A little more pressure and fidgeting and finally the lens was fully retracted. I tould him that I am never going to buy any Canon product again. Then i switched on and and the camera worked normally. I tried pulling the lens to keep if from going back in, but that did not work. Shat myself when the focus was off but it soon came back. I removed the caulk that seemed to be in excess, left what I could and snapped the ring back in place, paying attention to fit the appropriate parts together.

This person had a similar lens error to yours and fixed it by grabbing and holding onto the lens barrel as it was attempting to reclose. FinePix A500: had this solution, tried everything.
