After a thorough cleaning, the camera was back to working condition again. The idea is that the camera will try to autofocus while the lens is extending, hopefully seating the lens barrel guide pins in their slots. Not the answer you're looking for? Many thanks, great advice. HOWEVER, there is also some obvious potential for damaging or dislodging internal components with this method, such as unseating ribbon cables, or cracking LCD screens. But hey, that's better than buying a whole new camera. many people seem to solve the problem by simply giving the camera a good solid whack on a hard surface or blowing compressed air on it. Blowing compressed air into the lens did the trick! Toevoegen aan Wil je hier later nog een keer naar kijken? AND IT WAS! Fix #6a: This is a variation of Fix #6, and should be tried if the lens barrels appears straight (not crooked).

The next time I pressed quite hard (again) using my fingernail, and pressed in several locations where the lens was protruding. Turned off camera and performed slightly-more-than-gentle twisting of the lens. Reinsert the cable only AFTER tapping the camera.

Sometimes when I turn on the camera the legend "Lens error: 120,1,0,0" appears. But repair would involve opening up the camera and individually reseating each ribbon cable connector. Help! Fix #1a: If new batteries didn't work, try pressing and holding the Menu, Function, Function Set, or OK button while turning the camera on. It had this lens error and I noticed the whole lens was crooked.
