Another problem mentioned on the site blames a sticky iris in the lens, caused by grease entering inside from the microphones built into the lens. I did exactly what you said and it worked. It would only produced a blank screen and the E18 error it would not do anything else, and then shut down. I had to take the camera apart a second time because I didn't realize this.
