Is the printer blinking "Error 46" or "Unable to Clean"? You will need to see an authorized service center for repair. The realty is that no one would normally perform the procedure as it requires tearing down the printer.

Care is needed in maintenance mode, otherwise critical settings may be inadvertently corrupted. Type in 80 using the numerical keypad. Tried that. Thank you - how the hell would I have known how to do that - was about to junk but had all these carrtridges I had not used!

As this series is already quite old another few years and the cartridges may no longer be available anyway. How do I get to maintenance mode? why is this??? I had a paper jam/could not print error but it went into a seemingly continuous cleaning mode after (and there wasn't any paper jam to begin with).
